Situated on the northern shore of Great Slave Lake, Yellowknife is the capital of the Northwest Territories. It is a dynamic, inclusive community that combines modern amenities with a small-town feel and serves as the Northwest Territories' primary hub for economic activity. With fairly strong economic indicators — a low unemployment rate and a highly educated population who earn some of Canada's highest household incomes — Yellowknife wanted an economic development strategy that would build on its existing advantages while preparing for upcoming challenges, like the scheduled closure of nearby mines.
Under our former name, FWCO Management Consultants, Qatalyst developed a comprehensive economic development strategy for Yellowknife that would guide the city's economic development efforts for the five-year period from 2020 to 2024. We identified a range of levers that Yellowknife and other Northern communities could employ to encourage investment and development. We also emphasized timely and decisive action to address the economic fallout of the looming mine closures.
